The Record: Contemporary Art and Vinyl, is the type of pop culture show that sells itself—though I think the marketing and advertising we created played a part in getting the word out to Bostonians and out-of-state visitors alike. Most institutional advertising relies on signature imagery to brand a show rather than clever concepts or unique art direction. With that said, when the show launched, the ad landscape in Boston had been completely bought out by three strong and exponentially larger brand campaigns for Apple (iPad2), Jet Blue (“You Above All”), and The Museum of Fine Arts (Dale Chihuly exhibition). Despite the competition for attention, our relatively small campaign visually held its own next to the others, and the ICA saw a significant increase in visitor numbers.
